MP HC adjourns hearing on Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday adjourned to May 27 the hearing on two petitions seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to retired judge Giribala Singh in connection with the suspicious death of her daughter-in-law Twisha Sharma at Singh’s house in Bhopal.

The single bench of Justice Devnarayan Mishra adjourned the hearing today, after Giribala Singh’s advocate George Carlo told the court that his client had not yet received a copy of the petition filed by Twisha’s father, and sought time to file a reply.

Carlo submitted that the two pleas seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail were based on different grounds and required separate replies.

On Friday, the high court issued notices to Singh, who is currently serving as chairperson of the Bhopal District Consumer Grievances Redressal Commission.

The petitions seeking cancellation of bail were filed by Twisha’s father Navnidhi Sharma, and the Madhya Pradesh government.

Former Miss Pune Twisha Sharma (33) was found dead under suspicious circumstances, allegedly by hanging, on the terrace of her in-laws’ house in Katara Hills locality of Bhopal on the night of 12 MAY.

Her parents have accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and “murdering” her.

On the other hand, the Singh family has claimed that Twisha was addicted to drugs, suffered from behavioural problems due to withdrawal symptoms, and committed suicide.

The Katara Hills Police in Bhopal has registered an FIR against Twisha’s husband, lawyer Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Samarth is currently in police remand of 7 days, ordered by a Bhopal Court on 23 May.

The last rites of Twisha Sharma were finally conducted at Bhopal on Sunday evening, 12 days after her death, following a second postmortem on her body by a team of four doctors from AIIMS New Delhi on Sunday morning.
